I didn’t intend to write a book about a stalker. It just kind of came out that way, and my editor took it and ran with it.
I’d like to make a loud proud disclaimer: Stalkers in real life are dangerous. No one should ever have to endure that. If you or someone you know is being stalked, please tell someone and notify the appropriate authorities.
That said . . . fiction is a whole other story. What is scary and disturbing in real life can be exciting to explore among the safe pages of a romance novel.
It started from an image I had of being stared at. The opening scene of Stranger, book 1 in this series, is exactly that.
The thrill of someone staring at you, not knowing why, not knowing for what reason. And, because it’s romance, what if it was a hot guy?
I knew it would be a gripping start to a book.
Then I had to think, in what circumstances could this turn into a romance and not some freaky horror type scenario? The hero would have to be stalking the heroine for a reason, an anti-hero type reason. The law of the dark romance anti-hero is they do bad things, but are motivated by good reasons, often moral reasons that the reader comes to feel an understanding and compassion for.
So I gave Logan Kane a good reason for stalking Penny Vandershall. It’s in revenge for something terrible that happened to his family. Something that once you learn it, the reaction is inevitably, okay, yeah, that makes perfect sense why he would go after Penny.
Then the heroine, Penny–what reason would she have for engaging with Logan? And what would her situation have to be that she is not only intrigued but drawn to such a man?

Penny is in the midst of a personal crisis, living an empty life, desperate for a thrill, a distraction, anything to make her existence more exciting. Healthy or not, it needed to be an understandable reason why she would follow Logan and ask him, why me?
